In a previous post I wrote about outdoor pickleball balls. It seemed apropos since I have been playing outdoors all summer. In this article I write about indoor pickleball balls. This is a difficult subject for me because I have only played pickleball indoors once, and we played with Onix pickleball balls, which others had brought to the gym and claimed were the best pickleball balls for indoors. Keep in mind that I live in Florida so we play outdoors all the time.

Pickleball Balls Indoor vs Outdoor

In the post on outdoor pickleball balls I did not take the time to discuss the difference between outdoor and indoor pickleball balls.

There are two types of pickleball balls: indoor and outdoor balls. Believe it or not, the average pickleball player does not know the difference between the two types of balls except for the way they feel and play.

Generally speaking, indoor pickleball balls are lighter, softer and smaller than outdoor balls. They have 26 holes, each of which is larger than outdoor pickleball hole. The holes can be larger and weight lighter because the ball is not affected by wind or inhospitable weather conditions.

Because indoor pickleballs are lighter and softer they are easier to control but much tougher to hit hard. That makes sense of course. Indoor balls are manufactured in a way that makes them play better on a wood or gymnasium surface rather than on asphalt or concrete. Indoor balls generally last longer than outdoor balls because indoor surfaces are more forgiving than outdoor surfaces on the outer layer of the ball. So these are the differences between outdoor and indoor pickleball balls.

11 Outdoor Pickleball Balls

Why do some players like the Onix Pure 2? Where I play in Boynton Beach this is the pickleball ball you see the most. Same for the courts In Livingston, NJ, The most popular ball there is also the Onix Pure 2, but I’ve been in games there where some players will only play with the DuraFast 40, which, according to most reviews, is the most popular pickleball ball. The competitive league I play in West Palm Beach, FL requires all matches be played with the Franklin Sports X-40. Go figure.

So here are the most popular pickleball balls on the market. Maybe from these reviews you will be able to determine which pickleball ball is most suitable for your style of play.

  • Onix Pure 2
  • Gamma Sports Photon
  • Jugs Sports
  • Kingran
  • Midnight
  • Onix Fuse
  • Champion Sports
  • The Black Ball
  • Pbsport
  • Tourna
  • Sey6

  • Outstanding playability and accurate flight with True Flight Technology

Useful Reviews:

In addition to being easier to see, the balls have consistent bounce and play well. They are USAPA approved tournament balls. I have already ordered a larger quantity at the request of my fellow players.

This may be normal, but these tend to break along the seam after several games. I would guess they last about 15 hours of constant hard play. Not bad. Not sure what the life expectancy is supposed to be with these.

This one bounces and responds well. I prefer the orange as well it’s easier to see against the backdrop of the gym I play at.

Excellent feel, great touch, spin, and pace. Better than Jugs, and last longer, no breakage, and (so far) they don’t go flat and squishy after a lot of use.

Our group has played with several brands. These are by far the best.

I love the flight of these balls. I have more control in shot placement too.

While called indoor balls, they feel semi-firm, like hybrids. Work both indoors and out. The color works particularly well on light colored floors.

Useful Reviews:

Our club recently switched from the ONIX Pure 2 to the Gamma Photon b/c the optic/neon green color is much easier to see indoors. Also, the Photon is a little harder which gives it a nice feel. It won’t compare to the hardness of a Dura or a Franklin but those balls are horrible for durability.

These balls are decent quality, but they skid a lot on the finished wood surface where I play most of the time. I ended up donating these to another local group that plays on rubberized floors. They work much better on that surface.

These won’t crack like your standard pickleballs! I play with a rough crowd that was cracking a ball a game. These are holding up well!

These balls, designed for indoor use, worked very well with our new paddles. They are just the right weight and proved to be accurate in landing where we wanted them to and allowed us to put spin on them for more challenging shots.

Useful Reviews:

Can’t say enough good about these balls. I’ve just purchased another dozen balls, making four dozen all together. We use them every morning playing Pickleball indoors. After playing with the first dozen for six months, we have only broken or squashed two of them. I’ve been sharing them with over 20 players and we play five days a week for about two hours per day.

We have found these to be the best option for our indoor use. We have 3 courts at the Y and there’s play 6 days a week. These hold up well and we have no complaints.

Very visible. I bought them because i was having trouble seeing the ball well in bright light. Everyone I play with likes them.

They are great pickleballs, the ones with the green tint. They are perfect for indoor play, light, and make a good sound coming off the paddle.

Useful Reviews:

These balls are very visible in the gym that we play in. However, they made blue marks all over my yellow paddle and they would not wash off. So if you get them. Scrub them down first. I would give them 5 stars if it wasn’t for the fact it discolored my new yellow paddle. We got the pink ones to and they did not discolor my paddle, only the blue ones. They even left marks on the gym floor. So again, a great ball, just scrub them down before using them.

Ingenious. So useful on many indoor courts where the wall and ceiling colors or the lighting are not favorable for lighter colored balls.

Great balls! Perfect for the lighting in our indoor courts.
